On the night of August 10, 2026, a major traffic accident with a fatal outcome occurred on one of the key transport arteries of southern Ukraine — the Odesa-Mykolaiv highway. According to the Main Directorate of the National Police in the Odesa region, three people died as a result of the collision, and seven more injured were taken to medical facilities. The incident occurred at night when visibility on the road was limited.
Circumstances of the tragedy: driving into the oncoming lane
According to preliminary investigation data, the cause of the accident was a cargo van driving into the lane of oncoming traffic. The 56-year-old driver, heading towards Mykolaiv, lost control of the vehicle. As a result, the van drove into the oncoming lane, where it collided head-on with two minibuses traveling in the opposite direction. The force of the impact was colossal: the van sustained critical damage, its body was completely deformed, and the cab turned into a pile of metal.
Consequences and victims of the accident
The tragedy claimed the lives of three people. Among the deceased were the driver of the cargo van, as well as two passengers of one of the minibuses: a 34-year-old man and a 73-year-old woman. Seven other people in the minibuses sustained injuries of varying degrees of severity. The injured were urgently hospitalized for medical assistance. At the scene, rescuers, medics, and police officers worked to evacuate bodies and inspect the accident site.

Police have already begun to establish all the circumstances of the accident. The question of entering the relevant information into the Unified Register of Pre-trial Investigations is being resolved. Law enforcement officers urge drivers to strictly observe the Rules of the Road, be extremely attentive behind the wheel, and choose a safe speed, especially at night. It is recalled that fatal accidents on the roads of Ukraine in recent years have prompted systemic changes in the field of road safety.

Experts note that such measures could become an important step in reducing accidents on the roads of Ukraine, especially at night and on highways with heavy traffic.
