Fatal car crash in Kyiv: Mercedes driver who crashed into an underpass charged
Law enforcement authorities in Kyiv have officially charged the driver of a Mercedes-Benz who, at high speed, crashed into the structure of a pedestrian underpass. The accident resulted in the deaths of four people, including two police officers and a minor.
According to RBC-Ukraine, citing the Main Directorate of the National Police in Kyiv, investigators have detained a 49-year-old resident of the Kherson region under Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. He is accused of violating road safety rules, resulting in the death of multiple persons (Part 3 of Article 286 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). The maximum penalty under this article is up to 10 years of imprisonment.
Victims and injured
According to the latest data, four people died as a result of the tragedy: a 12-year-old boy, a 47-year-old woman, and two police officers aged 21 and 23. In addition, three other people were injured — two men and a woman. The injured are in hospitals; their condition is being assessed by doctors.
Circumstances of the accident
The accident occurred on June 5 in the Karavaevy Dachi area. A Mercedes-Benz C300 left the roadway at high speed and crashed into the support of the underpass. Expert analysis showed that the driver was sober at the time of the accident.
Driver's history of violations
It has been established that the suspect had already been involved in four traffic accidents, two of which occurred in the current year. First Deputy Head of the Patrol Police Department, Oleksiy Byloshytskyi, stated that 39 traffic violations were recorded for the driver's vehicle, most of which were speeding. Only in the first half of the year, there were 18 such cases.
Preventive measure
Investigators have already presented the accused with a petition to apply a preventive measure in the form of detention. The decision will be made by the court in the near future.
