The War Requires a Diplomatic Solution
A full-scale conflict in Ukraine cannot be resolved by military means alone. This view was expressed by Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico during a conference on the reconstruction of Ukraine held in Gdansk. According to the head of the Slovak government, the only viable path to ending hostilities lies through diplomacy and negotiations.
"I believe that the EU should support peace initiatives. This destructive war has no military solution and can only end at the negotiating table," Fico emphasized in his speech.
Humanitarian Aspects and International Law
The Slovak leader drew attention to the scale of the tragedy unfolding on Ukrainian territory. He noted that the war entails colossal human suffering and destruction, the consequences of which extend far beyond the country's borders. In this regard, Fico called for maximum diplomatic efforts based on full respect for international law and the key provisions of the UN Charter.
In the Prime Minister's opinion, there is no better alternative for Slovakia than adhering to these principles. He added that during recent discussions among European leaders, a consensus is forming: more EU member states are realizing the advantages of a peaceful settlement.
Positions of Other Players
The topic of negotiations remains at the forefront for other key figures on the international stage. Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov previously stated that for dialogue to resume, the EU must "realize the real situation," including regarding the war in Ukraine. At the same time, the Kremlin representative emphasized that Russia was not the initiator of the cessation of contacts with Europe.
At the same time, French President Emmanuel Macron voiced a different point of view. He noted that G7 leaders and US President Donald Trump have come to the conclusion that Russia did not have a serious desire to negotiate.
New Proposals from Italy
The search for compromise solutions continues. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni plans to put forward a proposal at the upcoming summit for a special negotiator from the European Union on the issue of the war in Ukraine. According to media reports, this responsible mission could be entrusted to a representative of one of the mid-sized countries, which should contribute to greater neutrality and efficiency of the process.
