A significant event has occurred in the world of sports that will alter the balance of power at upcoming international tournaments. The International Fencing Federation (FIE) has decided to fully lift the restrictions that were in place regarding athletes and officials from Russia and Belarus. Now, athletes from these countries will have the opportunity to participate in the World Championship not in a neutral status, but in the full capacity of their states — with national flags and anthems.

Full Lifting of Restrictions Starting in 2026

The new rules will come into effect with the start of the 2026 Senior World Fencing Championships. The tournament is scheduled to take place in Hong Kong from July 22 to 30. In its press release, the FIE emphasized that the decision was made based on the principles of the Olympic Charter: non-discrimination, equal treatment, and the universality of sport. The Federation also relied on its own statutes when taking this step.

Effectively, this means the complete removal of so-called "protective measures" that previously limited the participation of representatives from Russia and Belarus in international competitions. Now they will be able to compete in both individual and team disciplines under the symbolism of their countries.

Decision Supported by the IOC

In justifying its decision, the FIE cited several key documents. First, this is the decision of the Olympic Summit from December 2025, dedicated to youth tournaments. At that time, the recommendation of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) not to restrict access for young athletes with Russian and Belarusian passports to international competitions was supported.

Secondly, the federation mentioned the decision of the IOC Executive Board dated May 7, 2026. According to it, the IOC no longer recommends restrictions on the participation of Belarusian athletes, including teams, in competitions of international federations.

Historical Context and Prospects

Thus, the World Championship in Hong Kong will become the first major senior FIE tournament after the full return of Russians and Belarusians to competitions under national symbolism. This event could become a turning point in the history of modern fencing, opening a new era in international relations between countries through sport.

Recall that last year the International Fencing Federation already added Russians and Belarusians to the list of participants in the World Championship. The tournament then took place in Tbilisi from July 22 to 26. However, at that time they competed in a neutral status, without the use of national symbolism.

Achievements of Ukrainian Fencers

Separately, it is worth noting the successes of the Ukrainian fencing team, which triumphantly concluded the 2025 European Championship, held from June 14 to 19 in the Italian city of Genoa. These achievements show the high level of preparation of Ukrainian athletes and their ability to compete on the international stage.

The return of Russia and Belarus to international tournaments under their own flags opens new horizons for the development of fencing as a sport. This event will have far-reaching consequences for the entire sports industry and international relations in general.
