Powerful Explosion and Fire at Key Lukoil Facility

On the night of July 2, in the Nizhny Novgorod region, in the city of Kstovo, a powerful explosion occurred. According to eyewitnesses and operational information, the strike hit the territory of an oil refinery owned by the company "Lukoil-Nizhnekamsknefteorgsynthes". As a result of the attack, a large-scale fire broke out at the enterprise, which continues to rage.

Visually, the situation looks critical: columns of black smoke rise from the fire, and tongues of flame engulf the production buildings. The attack was carried out using unmanned aerial vehicles.

Significance of the Object for the Economy

The strike on the refinery in Kstovo has serious strategic significance. This is one of the leading oil refining enterprises in Russia, playing a key role in supplying fuel to the capital region. The installed capacity for primary oil refining at the plant is about 17 million tons per year.

The range of products of the enterprise is extensive and includes more than 50 items. Among them:

  • Automotive fuel;
  • Aviation fuel;
  • Diesel fuel;
  • Petroleum bitumens;
  • Paraffins and other petrochemical products.

Risks for Neighboring Objects

Particular concern is caused by the proximity to the fire site of another important infrastructure object — the Novogorkovsky Thermal Power Plant. At the moment, there is no exact information on whether the fire has spread to the territory of the power plant, however, the risk remains high due to the intensity of the fire at the refinery.

History of Attacks on Energy Infrastructure

The oil facility in Kstovo has become the target of attacks not for the first time. Previously, in April and May 2026, strikes were already made on this plant. This event fits into the general picture of systematic impact on the energy sector. According to available data, defense forces have worked on 8 out of 10 largest oil refineries in Russia, and some facilities were attacked repeatedly.

In recent months, the list of affected enterprises has been supplemented with new names. Earlier, there were reports of successful strikes on the refinery in Ufa and the military plant in Penza. Not so long ago, the plant in the city of Slavyansk-on-Kuban in the Krasnodar Krai was also hit, where a large-scale fire also started.
