Five maritime unmanned vehicles were detected and neutralized in the Black Sea waters off the Romanian coast. This was announced by the Acting Minister of Defense, Sorin Miruță, as reported by RBC-Ukraine citing the Digi24 TV channel.
Incident Details
According to the minister, debris from the drones, which were destroyed, was found at sea. Some of them carried explosives on board, while others did not. Four of the five incidents occurred before the drone explosion in the port of Constanta, and one occurred after.
Responsibility for Security
Responding to questions about the explosion in Constanta and the lack of an independent report from the Romanian army, Miruță emphasized that in peacetime, the responsibility for port security does not lie with the military. In his words, the army intervenes only upon request, while in standard mode, security is ensured by other state structures.
Chronology of Events
On June 5, a Ukrainian surface drone that had arrived at the pier exploded in the port of Constanta. There were no casualties or victims. The Ukrainian Navy confirmed that the drone belonged to them but lost control due to Russian electronic warfare systems and ended up off the Romanian coast.
Government Response
Media reported that four more boats with explosives were detected in the coastal zone of the Constanta port. Later, Romania approached Ukraine with a proposal to change the operating algorithm for maritime drones. Additionally, Bucharest is conducting negotiations to strengthen its own air defense system following the incident.
