The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has approved the key parameters of the 2026–2027 academic year for the secondary education system. In the context of martial law, the government has decided to switch to a more flexible model of organizing the educational process, which will allow the schedule to be adapted to the actual security situation in the regions.
RBC-Ukraine reported this, citing a statement by Prime Minister Yulia Sviridenko. According to the approved regulations, the academic year formally ends on June 30, 2027. However, the actual date of the end of classes, the holding of the last bell, and the duration of summer holidays will no longer be strictly fixed at the national level.
Regional approach to security
The Prime Minister emphasized that the final decision on the start of the academic year in each specific community will be made by the regional and Kyiv City military administrations jointly with the founders of educational institutions. This approach is designed to ensure maximum flexibility: the educational process can be organized taking into account the current situation, without interruption even in difficult conditions.
"The academic year will last until June 30, 2027, however, the actual date of completion of classes, the holding of the last bell, and the duration of summer holidays will be determined by the educational institutions themselves," Yulia Sviridenko explained.
The role of pedagogical councils
The responsibility for specific dates falls on the shoulders of the pedagogical councils of schools. They will have to analyze the security situation and the needs of the participants in the educational process before approving the schedule. This means that the deadlines for completing studies and starting holidays may differ significantly in different schools and regions of the country.
Earlier, it was reported that the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine also updated the rules for the 2026 admissions campaign. In addition, a new mechanism for admission to Ukrainian universities has been launched for Ukrainian high school graduates residing in European countries.
