A significant event has occurred in the Ukrainian transport market that could change travel habits. The largest international bus operator, FlixBus, has launched its first domestic route, connecting the country's two largest cities — Kyiv and Kharkiv. Until now, the company operated exclusively on international routes, linking Ukraine with Europe.
Start of a new era of transport
The launch of the route became possible thanks to a partnership with the local carrier "Ukrainian Bus Lines". This cooperation allowed buses in the recognizable green FlixBus corporate style to be put into service. As Michal Lehmann, Vice President of the company in Eastern Europe, noted, this step is strategically important for the development of the transport network within the country.
"This is the first domestic bus route in our green corporate design. It will simplify access for residents of Kharkiv to the rest of our network routes," Lehmann emphasized in an interview with NV.
Bridge to Europe
The new route serves not just as intercity communication, but also as a convenient hub for international trips. Now, passengers from Kharkiv will be able to comfortably reach Kyiv, where they can transfer to flights to European countries. The list of popular destinations available through this logistics includes Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, Germany, and other states.
Market potential
FlixBus has been operating in the Ukrainian market for seven years and is present in 21 cities. Despite the long history of presence, until now all routes were oriented towards leaving the country. The operator's management sees a gap here that is now beginning to be filled.
"In Ukraine, the level of development of intercity bus transport is quite low. The potential here is very large, it just needs to be revealed," Lehmann stated.
Company experts believe that the development of the domestic network is an important element of Ukraine's integration into the European transport system. Similar models, where domestic flights work in conjunction with international ones, have long been successfully operating in EU countries.
