The highlands of the Ukrainian Carpathians have come under the impact of the elements. On the morning of June 12, 2026, a sharp deterioration in weather conditions was recorded in the region, posing a threat to tourists and local residents. Mountain rescuers in the Carpathian region are calling for maximum caution.

Critical situation on the peaks

The situation in the mountains became critical by 8:00 AM. On Mount Pop Ivan Chernohorsky, also known as the Black Mountain, dense cloud cover and thick fog have set in. Thermometers in the highlands showed a temperature drop to 0 degrees Celsius, which is an anomaly for June.

Weather conditions are exacerbated by precipitation and strong winds. A northwesterly wind with a speed of 12 meters per second is observed. Visibility on the routes is significantly limited, making movement in the mountains extremely dangerous.

Warnings for tourists

Specialists from the Ivano-Frankivsk Regional Center for Hydrometeorology have issued an official warning. Over the next 24 hours, significant rain is forecast in Ivano-Frankivsk and throughout the region — from 15 to 29 mm of precipitation in 12 hours.

Experts assess the medical-meteorological conditions as Type 2. Visibility on highways has dropped to 1–3 km. In light of this, rescuers strongly recommend that tourists double-check the forecast before heading out on a route and, if possible, postpone the hike until the weather stabilizes.

Local terrain features

Mount Pop Ivan Chernohorsky is one of the highest peaks in the Ukrainian Carpathians, standing at 2,028.5 meters. The peak is located at the southeastern end of the main ridge of the Chernohora massif, on the border of two regions. On the summit of the mountain are partially restored ruins of a Polish astronomical-meteorological observatory, now known as the "White Elephant".
