The food market in Ukraine is showing unstable dynamics: while prices for some basic goods are falling, the cost of other products is rising again. A price monitoring study conducted by RBC-Ukraine in the largest retail chains has revealed unexpected changes in the cost of popular products.

Buckwheat: anomalously low prices

The main event of the week was the appearance of significantly cheaper buckwheat on sale. The «Silpo» chain offered groats of the «Sytyi dvor» brand at a price of 36.99 UAH per kilogram. This offer became the lowest against the backdrop of general market trends. In other major retailers, the cost of buckwheat remains at the level of the previous day, however, the appearance of such a price offer in «Silpo» may signal the beginning of a price correction in the grain category.

Eggs: prices rising again

At the same time, the category of C1 chicken eggs demonstrated divergent dynamics. In a number of retail outlets, egg prices have gone up again. This creates a complex picture for consumers: savings on grains may be offset by the rising cost of protein products.

Milk and bread: stability with nuances

No radical changes have been recorded in the bakery segment. Prices for pasteurized milk in small packages (400–450 g) generally remained at the level of Wednesday, however, there is no universal stability — local fluctuations are observed in some chains.

Sunflower oil: leadership of affordable brands

In the category of refined sunflower oil (0.5-liter bottles), products from certain brands remain the most affordable. Competition in this segment remains high, which allows consumers to find profitable offers even in conditions of general inflationary pressure.

Research methodology

To compile a comparative analysis, only the cheapest offers in their respective categories, published on the official websites of retailers, were selected in each chain (ATB, «Silpo», Novus, and «Auchan»). This allows for an objective picture of the minimum prices available to consumers as of July 9.
