In Odesa, on Staroportofrankovskaya Street, an incident involving a fire occurred on August 9, 2026. The emergency happened during the day in close proximity to the 'Kopeyka' supermarket (house 22/1). Fire and rescue units arrived promptly at the scene and extinguished the fire.

Circumstances of the incident

According to data from the scene, the fire occurred while a store security guard attempted to refuel an autonomous power source. The man was pouring gasoline from one container to another to ensure the generator's operation. During the transfer, a flash of fuel vapors occurred, which instantly spread to the victim's clothing and the jerrycan.

Witnesses report that the fire flared up suddenly. Bystanders and shopping center staff managed to extinguish the flames with improvised means before professional rescuers arrived. Nevertheless, the victim suffered severe thermal burns to a significant part of his body and was urgently hospitalized at the burn center of one of the city's hospitals.

Response of emergency services

A MAN fire truck from the State Emergency Service (SES) of Ukraine was dispatched to the scene. Rescue teams extinguished the local fire within minutes. The supermarket and sales halls were not damaged, and there was no threat to shoppers and store visitors.

Experts link the incident to a combination of factors characteristic of the current situation in Odesa. First, the city is experiencing anomalous heat: today, August 9, thermometer readings rose above +36°C. At such temperatures, the concentration of fuel vapors in the air becomes critical, increasing the risk of spontaneous combustion or a flash from the slightest spark.

Secondly, the safety issue regarding the use of generators has intensified against the backdrop of regular nighttime shelling of energy infrastructure. Strict power outage schedules are in effect in the city, forcing businesses to switch en masse to autonomous power supply. Under conditions of summer heat and stress from emergency situations, safety requirements for storing and transferring fuel require maximum caution.
