Events in the Romanian city of Galati have ceased to be a local news story and have turned into a serious challenge for the entire NATO security architecture. A Russian drone that breached the airspace did not just crash into a residential building but also posed a question to the Alliance about the real effectiveness of its air defense systems.
Washington reacted instantly and firmly. US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker, commenting on the incident in his blog, did not resort to diplomatic euphemisms. He called Moscow's actions a "reckless incursion" and emphasized that the United States stands shoulder to shoulder with Romania.
Three Minutes to Save
The tragedy unfolded on the night of May 29, when amidst massive strikes on Ukraine, one of the "Geran-2" type drones slipped out of air defense control and crossed the border. Romanian military admitted that the situation was critical: only four minutes passed from the moment the target was detected until it crashed. This time proved insufficient for interception, and the drone crashed into the roof of a high-rise building, causing a fire on the 10th floor.
Fortunately, casualties were avoided, but two people sustained injuries. Firefighters quickly contained the blaze, however, the very fact of a munition hitting a residential building on the territory of a NATO member causes concern.
Responsibility for Every Square Meter
In his statement, Whitaker clearly outlined the US position: protecting Romania's sovereignty is an unconditional priority. The phrase "we will defend every inch of NATO territory" sounds like a direct warning to Moscow that an escalation of the conflict could have unpredictable consequences for all of Europe.
This incident is just the tip of the iceberg. It demonstrates that security borders are becoming increasingly permeable, and the risks of accidental or intentional expansion of the combat zone onto Alliance territory are growing with each passing day.
