German Foreign Minister Johann Wadefuhl made a significant statement regarding the prospects for resolving the conflict in Ukraine. According to him, peace negotiations between the parties could be initiated as early as the current summer season.
Deadlock on the Front as a Catalyst for Diplomacy
The basis for the German diplomat's forecast is the current situation on the battlefield. Wadefuhl noted that neither side in the conflict currently holds a decisive advantage. In his assessment, military operations have effectively reached a deadlock, creating the prerequisites for seeking diplomatic solutions.
"Peace negotiations on Ukraine could begin this summer," the minister emphasized. He also expressed the opinion that Russian President Vladimir Putin may have reached a stage where he is seriously considering the possibility of starting a dialogue.
Reaction to Zelenskyy's Initiative
The statement from Berlin came against the backdrop of Kyiv's recent diplomatic activity. On June 4, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy published an open letter to the Russian leader. In the document, the Ukrainian head proposed holding a meeting in a third country to discuss the terms of a long-term peace.
The initiative was addressed to a wide range of people: personally to Vladimir Putin, representatives of the Russian elite, as well as Ukraine's international partners. However, the response from Moscow was negative. Vladimir Putin criticized the wording of the appeal, calling the tone of the letter "rude," and refused personal negotiations, stating that he saw no point in them.
Expert Assessment of the Situation
The Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Andriy Sybyga, commented on the Russian leader's refusal, pointing out that Putin has effectively missed the chance to get out of the war. According to the Ukrainian diplomat, the conflict is becoming increasingly disastrous for Russia, while international pressure on Moscow continues to grow.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump also spoke about the current status of the confrontation. He stated that Vladimir Putin is currently in a weaker position regarding the war against Ukraine than before.
