The end of June 2026 has entered German history as a period of unprecedented climatic anomaly. In just a few days, the country experienced a series of events that radically reshaped temperature statistics for decades of observations. The German Meteorological Service (DWD) recorded a unique situation: absolute national maximums were updated for three consecutive days, and on the night of June 28, the record for nighttime temperature was broken.
Avalanche of temperature records
The dynamics of temperature growth developed rapidly. Events unfolded in three federal states where thermometers showed values previously considered unattainable for Central Europe. The previous absolute record, set in July 2019 in Tönisvorst and Duisburg (41.2 °C), was exceeded in the shortest possible time.
The chronology of events is as follows:
- June 26: A value of 41.3 °C was recorded in Saarbrücken-Burbach (Saarland). Data preliminarily confirmed.
- June 27: In Möckern-Drewitz (Saxony-Anhalt), the thermometer rose to 41.5 °C.
- June 28: The peak of the anomaly fell on the municipality of Niesemünde in Brandenburg, where 41.7 °C was recorded. This figure is still awaiting final quality control but is already recognized as the new peak value.
Particular attention should be paid to the nighttime statistics. In the Saxon municipality of Kubschütz on the night of June 28, the temperature did not drop below 29.4 °C. This became an absolute record for "tropical nights" in Germany, beating the previous maximum of 27.2 °C, which had been held since 2003.
Meteorological causes and uniqueness of the situation
DWD experts link the extreme figures to a persistent high-pressure system that blocks the arrival of cool air masses and the active influx of tropical air. Climatologists emphasize that the uniqueness of the current heatwave lies not only in the figures but also in the timing. The continuous period of warnings about extreme heat stress (level 2) has lasted since June 18, which is an extremely early phenomenon for the end of June.
Stress test: infrastructure under pressure
The anomalous heat became a stress test for German infrastructure, revealing vulnerabilities in the operation of transport systems. High temperatures led to physical deformations of materials:
- Road network: Bulging and deformation of the asphalt surface were recorded on sections of the A2 federal highway due to the thermal expansion of concrete.
- Urban transport: Tram tracks were damaged in Leipzig. Melted sealant and rail displacement forced municipal services to temporarily suspend traffic on several routes.
Forecast and safety measures
In response to the situation, relevant authorities and medical professionals distributed recommendations to limit physical activity and strictly adhere to fluid intake, emphasizing the risks to vulnerable population groups.
However, the situation is nearing a resolution. According to the updated DWD forecast, a change in the synoptic picture is expected in the second half of the day on June 29. Air masses will shift to the east of the country, a cold front with thunderstorms and gusty winds will pass. This will lead to a decrease in temperatures to the climatic norm in the range of 25–29 °C.
It is important to note that according to DWD regulations, all data published on an operational basis have a preliminary status. The final entry of indicators into the national climate registry will take place only after the completion of the end-to-end quality control procedure and calibration of measuring equipment.
