Germany has made a strategic decision to significantly strengthen its military presence on NATO's eastern flank. A permanent German military contingent of approximately 5,000 personnel will be stationed in Lithuania, in close proximity to the border with Belarus. This was announced by Lithuanian Defense Minister Robertas Kaukas, who confirmed that the creation of infrastructure for the new garrison is proceeding ahead of schedule.

Accelerated Construction and Plans Until 2027

According to the approved plan, a full combat brigade will be deployed in Lithuania by the end of 2027. However, according to the Lithuanian Defense Minister, the preparation process is moving ten months ahead of schedule. On the site, where forests previously stood, large-scale construction is currently underway. As part of the site preparation, not only barracks are being built, but also full-fledged residential quarters, schools, kindergartens, and medical facilities to ensure the livelihood of military personnel and their families.

Robertas Kaukas emphasized that Germany and Lithuania will be ready to receive the full strength of the brigade by the end of 2027, and possibly even earlier. According to him, the unit will be fully equipped and ready to carry out deterrence tasks. Command of the new brigade has been entrusted to General Christian Huber.

Current Situation and Freedom Shield Exercises

At the moment, there are already about 1,800 German military personnel in Lithuania. In June of this year, they are participating in large-scale exercises codenamed Freedom Shield. The maneuvers are taking place in the Pabradė area, located just 20 kilometers from the Belarusian border.

During the exercises, the 45th Armored Brigade is interacting with units that will become the core of the future permanent grouping:

  • 203rd Armored Battalion from Augustdorf;
  • units of the 122nd Motorized Infantry Battalion from Oberfichtach.

It is these two battalions that are scheduled to be relocated to Lithuania on a permanent basis in 2027.

Geopolitical Context and Neighbors' Reaction

The Lithuanian Defense Minister called the deployment of German forces a "milestone in relations" between the two countries. This decision is directly linked to the deterioration of the situation in the region. Ukraine is currently strengthening its defense on its northern border, fearing that Russia may further draw Belarus into the conflict. In Kyiv, fortifications are being reinforced and intensified monitoring of military and drone activity in the border zone is being conducted.

Previously, in February 2022, Minsk provided Moscow with its territory for the invasion of Ukraine. Belarus regularly provides Russian troops with infrastructure and logistical support. Despite this, President Alexander Lukashenko has repeatedly stated that the Belarusian army will not take direct part in hostilities.
