A new conflict of interest has erupted in the world of professional basketball between national teams and NBA clubs. Greece's national team leader and 'Miami Heat' star Giannis Antetokounmpo will not participate in the upcoming official matches or the start of the national team's preseason training. The reason is the categorical demand from the American franchise's management, which insists on the forward's immediate arrival in the US to begin preseason training.
Pressure from 'Miami Heat' and injury consequences
According to information obtained from the authoritative publication Eurohoops and confirmed by Sport RBC.UA, the 'Miami Heat' management has issued an ultimatum to the Greek giant. The club demands that Giannis Antetokounmpo join the full training schedule as soon as possible before the start of the 2026/27 NBA regular season. Such a hardline stance by the club is predetermined by the extremely difficult and injury-plagued 2025/26 season. Last season, due to constant injuries, Antetokounmpo was able to play only 36 games, and from mid-March 2026, he was completely out of the game, causing serious concern among the 'Heat's doctors and management.
Greece's national team calendar without its leader
The absence of Antetokounmpo in the national team camp will be a serious test for the Greeks, who begin their preparatory process on August 14, 2026. As part of the preparation, the Greeks planned to hold two sparring matches in Athens — against the national teams of Poland (August 22) and Cyprus (August 24). After that, the delegation was supposed to travel to Riga, where on August 28 they were scheduled for an official qualifying match against the Ukrainian national team. Just three days later, on August 31, Greece was expected to face the powerful Spanish national team at home. Now the team will have to find tactical solutions without its main player.
Ukraine's national team plans and qualification context
In turn, the Ukrainian national team also begins its training camp on August 14 in Latvia. As part of the preparation for the match against the Greeks, the blue-and-yellow team's players have scheduled two friendly matches — against the University of Arizona team and the Latvian national team. It was previously reported that the Ukrainian national team has already announced its roster for the 2027 World Cup qualifying matches. The absence of Giannis Antetokounmpo in the match against Ukraine on August 28 could significantly change the balance of power and tactical arrangements in this confrontation.
Contradictory data
Although the Sport RBC.UA source cites Eurohoops, pointing to the categorical nature of the 'Miami Heat's decision, there are different opinions in the basketball community about how flexible the club's position might be. Some experts believe that the NBA and the Greek Basketball Federation may find a compromise, given Antetokounmpo's status as one of the best players in the world. However, at the moment, there have been no official statements from the NBA or FIBA about rescheduling or softening requirements, leaving the situation in limbo.
