The United States has moved from theory to practice in creating a comprehensive sky protection system. In Washington, the first large-scale tests of a new missile defense complex, dubbed the "Golden Dome," were successfully completed. The ambitious project aims to create an impenetrable barrier over North America capable of neutralizing any aerial threats.
Technological breakthrough and autonomy
The tests were personally observed by US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. According to him, the project is not just a concept but a real and powerful system. A key feature of the tests was the demonstration of an autonomous system. The complex independently detected targets and destroyed them without operator intervention.
During the maneuvers, so-called "advanced directed energy" was used. Although official details are classified, experts speculate that this involves the use of laser systems or microwave radiation to destroy objects. This radically changes the approach to intercepting targets compared to traditional kinetic means.
Response to the hypersonic threat
The development of the "Golden Dome" is dictated by the changing nature of military threats. The main adversary the new shield is aimed at is hypersonic missiles being developed by Russia and China. Such munitions can fly at speeds exceeding five times the speed of sound and constantly maneuver in flight. Traditional air defense systems often fail to track and intercept such targets in time.
The White House began developing the project in January 2025. Currently, the US lacks reliable protection against a massive ballistic missile strike. Existing systems can only cope with individual launches, for example, from North Korea. The new complex is intended to be a global solution to this problem.
Massive investment and implementation timelines
The creation of a huge infrastructure combining trackers, sensors, and interceptors is planned. According to the stated deadlines, the system should be fully ready by the end of Donald Trump's presidential term. To implement this grand plan, the government requested a defense budget of $1.5 trillion for the 2027 fiscal year. A significant portion of these funds will be directed specifically to the deployment of the "Golden Dome".
The US already holds the leading position in military spending in the world, and the implementation of the project will only increase this figure. Alongside the development of the shield, the US Army is betting on the development of unmanned technologies, relying on combat experience in Ukraine. The Pentagon plans to deploy training grounds that reproduce real electronic warfare conditions.
Innovations in "hardware"
In addition to large-scale defense systems, the Pentagon is paying attention to the micro-level of technology. Specialists are being sought to create computers without batteries and memory. Such a system must be able to adapt to new tasks independently, without the help of engineers and without connecting to the network, which is critical for autonomous operation in modern battlefield conditions.
