Google has officially confirmed its involvement in a major infrastructure project in the US, previously known by the codename Project Jade. The initiative has now been renamed Project Tembo. It involves the construction of a massive 2.7 GW data center located near Cheyenne, Wyoming.

Scale and Construction Details

According to published documentation, the new campus will be deployed on the territory of the Switchgrass Industrial Park, occupying a plot of 290 hectares. The plan includes the construction of four main facilities, as well as an office block, logistics zones, and buildings for network infrastructure. Construction is expected to be completed by 2031.

Previously, the implementation of this ambitious project was handled by Crusoe and Tallgrass Energy. At the time of the announcement, the campus capacity was stated to be 1.8 GW with the possibility of scaling up to 10 GW. Experts then noted that the energy consumption of the future data center would exceed that of all residential homes in the state of Wyoming.

Contractor Change and Power Strategy

In June of this year, Crusoe announced a suspension of work "at the client's request." It later turned out that construction at the campus site is now being carried out by a Google subsidiary, Jupiter Star Holdings, which has completely replaced Crusoe. The official reasons for the change of contractor are not disclosed.

Despite the change in developer, work on creating the power generation hub continues. Project partner Tallgrass Energy confirmed that the construction of infrastructure to provide the facility with its own energy under the "Bring Your Own Power" (BYOP) principle is in full swing. According to Google, in addition to local generation as part of the Power First strategy, the campus will be connected to the power grids of the local company Black Hills Energy.

Wyoming's Technology Hub

Cheyenne, the capital of Wyoming, is becoming a key center for data center placement in the US. Major projects by other tech giants are already being implemented in the vicinity of the city:

  • Meta has a large data center campus in the region.
  • In August 2025, Microsoft began construction of a new campus and plans to purchase an additional 1,300 hectares of land.
  • In October 2025, Related Digital launched the construction of a $1.2 billion data center on behalf of CoreWeave.
