Google has made a breakthrough in the field of mobile video editing by integrating a powerful tool called Video Remix into the Google Photos app. This new feature allows users to transform home videos using text commands, eliminating the need to master complex professional software.

Technology changing the perception of content

The innovation is based on the multimodal Gemini Omni neural network. This model, announced at the May developer conference, is positioned as an evolution of previous solutions, such as Nano Banana and the Veo 3.1 video generator. The key difference of Omni lies in its expanded understanding of physical laws — gravity and kinetic energy. Thanks to this, generated or modified scenes look maximally realistic, rather than just "drawn".

How Video Remix works

The feature is available in the "Create" tab in the Google Photos interface. Instead of tedious manual editing, the user simply needs to enter a text request (prompt). The library of templates and tools allows for instant changes to the video's appearance:

  • Application of unique artistic filters, for example, imitating watercolor painting.
  • Lighting adjustment: turning a gloomy scene into a bright morning video.
  • Complete replacement of the background with a different location.
  • Integration of digital avatars into the video stream.

Developers promise that processing the request and generating the updated video takes only a few seconds.

Security and copyright

Given the growing popularity of generative AI, the issue of content authenticity is particularly acute. To protect copyright and prevent the spread of fakes, Google has implemented the SynthID technology from the DeepMind division. All videos created or modified using Video Remix are automatically marked with invisible watermarks.

Availability and release schedule

At launch, the Video Remix tool will not be available for free to all users. Google has chosen a phased rollout strategy. Starting July 8, the feature will be available to subscribers of Google AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra paid plans.

The first wave of the release covers the territory of the USA and a number of other selected countries. In the future, the company plans to scale the AI editor to a global level, making it available to users around the world.
