The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has exposed and detained a citizen in Zakarpattia suspected of spying for Russian military intelligence. According to law enforcement officials, the man operated in western Ukraine, gathering intelligence on defense enterprises to prepare sabotage operations and air strikes.
Recruitment Scheme and Data Collection
According to the SBU, the suspect worked at a local industrial enterprise and was recruited by Russian special services. To obtain valuable information, he used his professional connections. While communicating with former colleagues who now work at various defense industry plants, the man allegedly inquired about their work experience and industry innovations.
The investigation believes that under the guise of professional interest, the agent discreetly extracted data needed by Russian intelligence. This information was planned to be used for strikes against defense industry facilities and terrorist acts against developers and officials.
Communication Channel with Moscow
It has been established that the collected intelligence was transmitted through an intermediary — the suspect's father. The man, residing in Kaliningrad, is allegedly also cooperating with Russian special services and acted as a liaison for transmitting information.
Law enforcement officials thwarted the agent's activities when he planned to change his place of work. His goal was to get a job at another defense enterprise, which would have allowed him to continue gathering information and expand the database for the enemy.
Context of the Fight Against Espionage
This arrest is the latest in a series of exposures of the Russian Federation's agent network on Ukrainian territory. Previously, the SBU reported the arrest of an agent suspected of guiding Iskander missiles at Odesa, as well as the capture of an 18-year-old saboteur who corrected strikes on Ukrainian territory.
