Rockstar Games appears to be preparing to drop one of the most recognizable and oldest mechanics in its gaming universe — the constant rhythmic button-mashing required to make a character run faster. A tradition familiar to players since the days of GTA 3 may come to an end after two and a half decades of continuous existence. This is reported by RBC-Ukraine, citing data from the outlet Insider Gaming, which obtained information about gameplay changes in the sixth installment of the series.
25 years of tradition: how sprinting worked in GTA
For two and a half decades, across all of the studio's key projects — from the GTA series to Red Dead Redemption 2 — accelerating a running character required rapidly and rhythmically mashing the X button on PlayStation or A on Xbox. The more intensely a player "tapped" the button, the faster the character could escape a police chase or pursuers. This mechanic became not just a functional element, but a true signature of Rockstar games, shaping a distinctive sense of thrill in tense chase moments.
What will change in GTA 6: the switch to L3
According to available data, the default sprint setting in the sixth installment will be changed: acceleration will be activated by default with a simple press of the left analog stick (L3). This scheme has long become a staple of most modern action games, in particular Call of Duty and Battlefield, so it will not pose any difficulty for an experienced player. Notably, in previous installments such as GTA 5, switching running to L3 could be done manually in the settings, but in the sixth game this scheme, according to the leak, will be activated right "out of the box" without the need to manually change the configuration.
Advantages of the new approach: smoothness and inclusivity
The switch to L3, by the developers' design, is intended to make character movement more natural and smooth, which harmoniously complements the updated movement physics in GTA 6. Moreover, the new scheme increases inclusivity: the constant rapid tapping of a single button in previous installments often caused hand fatigue, especially during long sessions. A freed right thumb, in turn, allows for comfortable looking around and camera control with the right stick while running — this, in the opinion of fans, is the main practical advantage of the innovation.
Community debates: thrill versus convenience
The change to the familiar mechanic has sparked active discussions among gamers on Reddit and in specialized media. Fans of the new approach consider the abandonment of repeated button-mashing a long-overdue step that will finally bring GTA in line with the standards of modern action games. Skeptics, on the other hand, are convinced that pressing the X/A button was a signature element of Rockstar games, adding thrill to tense moments, and its loss will impoverish the gaming experience. In addition, some players express concerns about possible accelerated wear of gamepads, the appearance of stick drift, and accidental shifts in the movement trajectory when pressing hard on the analog stick.
Contradictory data
It is important to note that, at the time of publication, information about the change in the sprint mechanic is based on data from the Insider Gaming leak and has not been officially confirmed by a press release or demonstration from Rockstar Games. On the one hand, several independent sources — RBC-Ukraine and Playground — unanimously reference the same leak, which increases its credibility and indicates consistency of versions. On the other hand, until an official announcement or gameplay demonstration, any details remain a matter of speculation: it is not ruled out that Rockstar will retain alternative layout options in the menu, leaving the possibility to return to the classic method for fans of traditional controls. Experts, in turn, hope precisely for the preservation of such a choice, which would allow satisfying both factions of the community.
