The incumbent president of the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine, Vadym Gutzeit, has officially confirmed his intention to continue working at the head of the sports organization. On the eve of the reporting and election General Assembly of the NOC, he gave an in-detail interview to specialized media outlets, where he spoke about the current situation regarding the submission of applications for the leadership position. According to the head of the agency, the established deadlines for document submission have expired, and no alternative candidates for this position have emerged.
Assessing his previous four years at the helm of the Ukrainian Olympic movement, Vadym Gutzeit emphasized that he has never regretted the decision to head the committee. Having been a professional athlete since the age of ten, he has dedicated 45 years of his life to sports. The leader noted that the greatest test for the entire sports sector was the first years of the full-scale war, when state support and the internal budget underwent colossal changes, and thousands of athletes were forced to train abroad.
Challenges of the Paris Olympics and funding
Special attention in his speech was paid by the NOC head to the results of the Ukrainian national team at the Olympic Games in Paris. Despite logistical difficulties, the lack of stable funding, and the dispersion of athletes across different countries, Ukrainian athletes managed to win three gold medals and a total of 12 awards, finishing 22nd-23rd in the overall medal standings. According to Gutzeit, the committee had to manually search for extra-budgetary funds to maintain athletes abroad and then organize their return and preparation within the country.
Contradictory data
The issue of organizing elections under martial law and the transparency of candidate nomination procedures has been repeatedly discussed in sports circles. While the official NOC leadership declares the expiration of document submission deadlines and the absence of alternative contenders after the deadline, some independent sports experts and public organizations pointed to the complex procedure for candidate admission and the informational closedness of the process. Critics note that current regulations could limit competitive struggle, while committee representatives insist on the absolute legitimacy and transparency of the electoral process.
Ahead, Ukrainian sports face new challenges, including preparation for upcoming international starts and the Youth Olympic Games. Vadym Gutzeit expressed hope for strengthening Ukraine's position on the international arena and further defending the national flag. The question of how the NOC will structure its work in the next Olympic cycle remains in the spotlight of the sports community and specialized media.
