On October 17 and 18, 2026, the Golden Gate Academic Theater in Kyiv will host a major theatrical premiere—the play HAMLET_TBD. The production is based on the classic play by British playwright Tom Stoppard, 'Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead.' This project, supported by the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation, invites the audience to rethink the familiar narrative through the lens of modern Ukrainian reality.
Rethinking Classics in the Context of War
Stoppard's original work, written in the 1960s, radically deconstructs Shakespeare's 'Hamlet,' shifting the focus from the Prince of Denmark to his minor university friends. The director of the production, Tetyana Kostynyuk, notes that the experience of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, who find themselves in a vortex of events without understanding the rules of the game, is alarmingly resonant with the state of contemporary Ukrainians during the full-scale war. “We are talking about a person whose rules of reality no one has explained, which creates a feeling of total uncertainty and existential fear of tomorrow,” the director emphasizes.
Metaphors and Artistic Techniques
The play promises to be a multi-genre statement. In addition to classical texts, the fabric of the production incorporates personal reflections from the actors and actresses. One of the central metaphors will be Tarot cards: they symbolize the characters' attempts to find support, patterns, and predictions in a chaos where control over events has been lost. This visual solution is intended to highlight society's shared need to look for signs where logic is powerless in the face of history.
Team and Expectations
The play is directed by Tetyana Kostynyuk, known for her experimental work. The cast includes Anastasiia Babii, Roman Yasynovskyi, and other theater actors. Preview shows will take place on October 15 and 16 before the official premiere. The play raises deep questions of memory, loss of the past, and the fragility of free choice, making it one of the most anticipated cultural events in Kyiv this autumn.
