The Friday evening of July 3 began with a surprise for many regions of Ukraine. Although official schedules for planned power outages were not in effect, the lights still went out in several oblasts. The cause was emergency measures introduced due to critical load on the power system.

The main factor that provoked the situation was a sharp increase in electricity consumption against the backdrop of anomalous heat. The mass use of air conditioners and household appliances increased the load on the grid by at least 25%.

Where restrictions are in effect

Emergency emergency outages were introduced in Kyiv and several oblasts. The situation remains tense, and energy companies are forced to make operational decisions to prevent a complete collapse of the system.

Particular attention is drawn to the situation in the Odesa region. Here, the problem is exacerbated not only by the heat but also by the physical condition of the infrastructure. In the Poltava region, energy workers warned of additional risks. Rain and strong gusts of wind are expected in the region until the end of the day. This creates a threat of wire breaks on overhead power lines, which could lead to new local accidents.

In addition to weather conditions and heat, other factors affect the stability of the network:

  • Scheduled maintenance work necessary to maintain infrastructure.
  • Liquidation of the consequences of Russian strikes on energy facilities.
  • Reduction in electricity import volumes.

The situation with the geography of outages is also changing. If the Sumy region was previously the most affected, now the most difficult situation is observed in the Donetsk region due to constant shelling by Russian occupiers.

Recommendations for the population

Ukrenergo calls on citizens to show responsibility in the evening, from 16:00 to 23:00. Specialists ask to save electricity as much as possible to help the power system survive peak load.

Usual hourly outage schedules are not yet in effect, however, restrictions are promised to be lifted as soon as the situation stabilizes. Energy workers emphasize that the situation can change very quickly.
