Ukrainians should prepare for an atypical heatwave that will sweep across the country at the end of June. Daytime temperatures may reach +38°C, and nights will offer little relief, remaining "tropical".

This was reported by Natalia Ptukha, Head of the Media Relations Department of the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center, in an interview with RBC-Ukraine. According to her, the synoptic situation is changing drastically: a flow of hot air from northern Africa, passing through southern and central Europe, is advancing towards Ukraine.

Timeline of the heatwave

According to the forecast, the situation will develop as follows:

  • June 27 (Saturday): The weather will be moderate, although temperatures of +29…+34°C are already being recorded in the western regions, and up to +35°C in Zakarpattia.
  • June 28 (Sunday): Hot air will begin to actively advance into the country, primarily affecting the western, Vinnytsia, and Zhytomyr regions.
  • June 29–30 (Monday and Tuesday): The peak of the anomaly. On the Right Bank, temperatures will rise to +35...+38°C. Other regions will be in the range of +29...+34°C.

Nightly minimums across the country will remain within +18…+23°C. A temperature above +20°C at night is classified as "tropical".

Consequences for infrastructure and the population

Temperatures above +35°C are officially considered severe heat and carry certain risks. Experts warn of possible complications in the operation of energy and utility companies. There is also a risk of disruption to rail and road transport due to the overheating of tracks and road surfaces.

Natalia Ptukha urges the population to take these factors into account when planning their activities. In Kyiv, the peak of the heat is also expected on June 29 and 30, with readings up to +38°C and nighttime temperatures of +21…+23°C.

Precipitation and anticyclone

In most regions, the weather will be without precipitation. The hot air is accompanied by an anticyclone, which will ensure clear skies and calm weather. The exception is the northeastern regions, where brief rains are possible during the day due to the passage of inactive atmospheric fronts. However, by Monday, June 29, precipitation will cease across the entire territory.

Weather moderation

Some relief is expected from July 2. Daytime maximums will begin to decrease, gradually returning to the climatic norm for July — +22…+28°C. Nevertheless, nights will remain warm for some time.

Specialists note that current indicators are atypical not only for June but for Ukraine as a whole. They are approaching record values recorded over the entire observation period. Most likely, daytime maximums for certain dates may be updated.
