The opening Group B match between the national teams of Canada and Bosnia and Herzegovina turned into a true battle of wills. The hosts, playing under the banner of the "Maple Leafs," were striving for their first-ever success at the World Cup. Their opponents — a solid Balkan side — were determined to prove that their presence at the world's biggest football forum was no accident.
Early success for the visitors and total pressure from the hosts
The start of the match did not go according to the Canadian script. The initiative was immediately seized by the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team, creating several dangerous moments in front of the hosts' goal. Already in the 21st minute, the visitors' activity paid dividends: Jovo Lukic won an aerial duel from a corner and opened the scoring with a precise header.
Canada responded instantly to the goal and took control of the match. Possession stood at 66% in favor of the hosts. The "Maple Leafs" bombarded the opponent's penalty area with crosses, earning a total of 9 corner kicks in the first half alone. However, the Bosnian defense, captained by Sead Kolasinac, held firm.
The best chances to equalize were missed by Jonathan David, whose shot from a favorable position was saved by goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj, and Tani Oluwaseyi, whose shot went wide without resistance. In stoppage time of the first half, Derek Cornelius also failed to convert a final opportunity. The teams went into the break with the score at 1-0 in favor of the visitors.
Dramatic second half and Kolasinac's save
The second half began with an attacking surge from the Canadians. In the 53rd minute, Oluwaseyi shot past the goalkeeper, but Bosnia was saved by Kolasinac, who made an incredible tackle and deflected the ball onto the crossbar. In response, the Balkan side created a super-chance: Emerdžan Demirović broke through one-on-one with Maxime Crepeau, but made a mistake in the dribble and missed the chance to double the advantage.
After the 60th minute, a real rain of substitutions began on the field. The hosts' coach Jesse Marsch took a risk, conducting a radical rotation in the attack and even taking off Jonathan David. The pressure intensified: Nikola Katic cleared the ball off the goal line, and in the 79th minute, Canada's joker Kyle Laing equalized with a powerful shot into the corner — 1-1.
Historic achievement and results
After the goal, the Canadians got their momentum and tried with all their might to snatch victory on their home turf. Exhausted by the high tempo, the Bosnians completely handed over the initiative and selflessly defended the draw, sitting deep in defense.
Despite their efforts, Canada could not score the decisive goal. However, the draw became a landmark event: it is the first point in the history of the "Maple Leafs" at the World Cup. It took seven matches across three tournaments to achieve this historic milestone.
The Group B quartet also features the national teams of Switzerland and Qatar. Their head-to-head match of the opening round will take place on Saturday, June 13, at 22:00 Kyiv time.
