The Ukrainian national futsal team has made a historic breakthrough, winning silver medals at the European Championship for the first time in its history. In the 2026 tournament final, the "blue-and-yellows" lost in a tough battle to the national team of Azerbaijan, but this result remains the highest achievement in the history of Ukrainian futsal.
Drama at the Tipos Arena
The decisive match of the continental championship took place at the Tipos Arena in Bratislava, Slovakia. The game kept fans on the edge of their seats until the final whistle. The Ukrainian team started the match aggressively and had an excellent chance to open the scoring as early as the 5th minute: a powerful shot by Sinitsyn unfortunately hit the crossbar.
The opponent responded instantly and demonstrated flawless execution. In the 7th minute, following a corner kick, Rzayev struck accurately into the far corner, outplaying the Ukrainian goalkeeper Magursky. The score became 0:1.
The Fight for Parity
Finding themselves in the role of chasers, the Ukrainian national team completely seized the initiative. Throughout the match, Tikhnenko, Sinitsyn, and Kolesnikov had excellent chances to equalize. For almost the entire second half, the team controlled the initiative, attacked the opponent's goal, and created a huge number of scoring opportunities, but the ball stubbornly refused to cross the goal line.
The opponents put the final point to the match. In stoppage time, when the Ukrainians went "all-in," an attack by Azerbaijan, thanks to Ataev, ended with a goal into an empty net. The final score was 0:2.
A New Page in History
Despite the bitterness of the defeat in the final, the tournament became the most successful in the history of the national team. Until now, the best result for the "blue-and-yellows" at European Championships was reaching the quarter-finals at the home Euro-2018 in Kyiv. In the six previous participations, the team could not advance beyond this stage.
For the Azerbaijan national team, this title became the second in the modern history of European championships since 2022, confirming its status as one of the strongest opponents in Europe. In turn, the Ukrainian national team proved that it is capable of competing on equal terms with the continent's elite, winning the first silver medals in its history.
