In the Polish city of Wroclaw, law enforcement authorities have opened a criminal case regarding the brutal assault on a 19-year-old Ukrainian citizen. The incident, which occurred in a popular youth leisure spot — Słodowa Island (Wyspa Słodowa) — has sparked widespread resonance and attracted the attention of diplomatic missions. Preliminary data suggests that the victim's linguistic identity was the cause of the conflict.

Circumstances of the Assault

The events unfolded in the evening. A young man, referred to as Volodymyr in the investigation materials, was in a public place having a phone conversation in Ukrainian. This moment became the trigger for aggression by a group of local residents.

According to police and local media, a group of 9–15 people approached the victim. Verbal aggression quickly escalated into physical violence: the attackers inflicted multiple blows on the young man. Medical personnel and police arrived at the scene promptly, however, the victim's condition required immediate emergency hospitalization.

Condition of the Victim

Medical examination recorded serious bodily injuries. The diagnosis given to the victim includes a number of severe injuries:

  • Fracture of the nasal bones with displacement of the nasal cartilage;
  • Injuries to the cervical and thoracic spine;
  • Multiple hematomas on the face, soft tissues of the head, and torso;
  • Acute moderate blood loss.

Alexandra Freus, an official representative of the Wroclaw Police Headquarters, confirmed the registration of the offense. Currently, an active search for the attackers is underway. Investigators are reviewing footage from external surveillance cameras and interviewing witnesses to identify the participants in the brawl.

The case is classified under articles of the Polish Criminal Code concerning group assault and hooliganism. Special attention is being paid to verifying the motive of hate based on national grounds. According to Article 257 of the Polish Criminal Code, public insult based on ethnic grounds is punishable by imprisonment for up to 3 years, while inflicting bodily harm as part of a group entails stricter liability.

Diplomats have published an appeal to citizens, urging them to observe safety measures and promptly inform the consulate of any incidents.
