The Security and Information Service of Moldova (SIB) has issued an alert: Russian intelligence agencies are conducting a large-scale campaign to collect personal data of the republic's citizens. The goal of the operation is to use the obtained information in a hybrid war and fraudulent schemes.

Mass Collection of Personal Data

In a statement on June 17, the agency confirmed that it received information about a coordinated data collection process. Russian structures are forming detailed databases containing:

  • Citizens' first and last names;
  • Email addresses and phone numbers;
  • Home addresses;
  • Copies of identity documents.

According to SIB experts, this data is not just stored but is actively transferred to transnational organized criminal groups (OCGs).

Link to Financial Crimes

The obtained information is used to implement complex fraud schemes. In particular, cases of theft from bank cards and cash theft are being recorded. SIB emphasized that these are not isolated incidents but part of a systematic effort aimed at undermining national stability.

The main goal of coordinated attacks is to create a sense of insecurity in society and distrust of state institutions.

Recommendations for Citizens

In light of the growing threats, SIB has called on the population to exercise increased vigilance. Experts recommend:

  • Do not provide personal data to unknown individuals or companies offering "quick investments";
  • Never disclose passwords and security data over the phone;
  • Double-check any requests for access codes or money transfers.

In the event of suspicious situations, it is necessary to immediately contact the police or call 112.

Crime Statistics

The relevance of the warning is confirmed by fresh statistics. On June 15 alone, the police registered 22 cases of telephone fraud. In 13 of these cases, citizens suffered damages exceeding 1 million lei.

Geopolitical Context

Events in Moldova are taking place against a backdrop of heightened regional tensions. Previously, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that intelligence services had received data on new Russian plans concerning the restriction of ties between Kyiv and Chisinau. According to the Ukrainian leader, one of the key goals of the Russian Federation is to curb security, economic, and strategic contacts between Ukraine, Moldova, and other states.
