Indonesia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has begun verifying information on the possible involvement of the country's citizens in the armed forces of the Russian Federation. As Foreign Ministry spokesperson Yvonne Mewengkang stated, it is currently necessary to additionally confirm the identities of the individuals involved, their citizenship, the circumstances of their recruitment, and the nature of any possible participation in hostilities. According to the diplomat, the verification is being carried out through Indonesia's diplomatic missions and in coordination with the relevant ministries and state institutions.
Recruitment Under the Guise of Employment
Separate attention in Jakarta is being paid to the question of whether Indonesians have become victims of fraud, exploitation, or recruitment under the pretext of employment. This refers to situations in which a person is offered a job that in fact entails involvement in military activity. "If there are victims of such a process among Indonesian citizens, the Government of Indonesia will take the necessary protective measures in accordance with the law in force," Yvonne Mewengkang emphasized. The Foreign Ministry also urged citizens to be cautious about job offers in conflict zones and about any offers that may entail military service in favor of another state.
Position of Ukrainian Intelligence
Earlier, the Ukrainian Foreign Intelligence Service reported that Russia had recruited at least eight Indonesian citizens into its armed forces to take part in the war against Ukraine. According to Ukrainian intelligence, documents confirming the facts of such recruitment were obtained.
Contradictory Data
There is a notable discrepancy between the positions of the two sides. The Ukrainian side presents the recruitment as an established fact, supported by the documents obtained, and names a specific figure — no fewer than eight people. Indonesian authorities, by contrast, do not confirm this data: the Foreign Ministry emphasizes that the identities, citizenship, and circumstances of the recruitment have not yet been confirmed and require additional verification through diplomatic channels. Thus, until the investigation is completed in Jakarta, the presence of Indonesians in the ranks of the Russian armed forces remains information that one side considers proven and the other — subject to verification.
Legal Consequences
Indonesia has legal provisions concerning the participation of its citizens in the military service of foreign states. These provide, in particular, for possible consequences for citizenship. At the same time, as noted by the Foreign Ministry, any decisions must be made on the basis of confirmed facts and in strict accordance with the country's legislation. The authorities also stated that they distance themselves from the possible participation of their citizens in the war on the side of Russia, while maintaining readiness to protect those who may have become victims of recruitment.
