Ukrainian landscapes are undergoing irreversible changes. The cause is not only global warming but also the active invasion of dangerous "alien" plants that are displacing local flora and threatening human health. Experts warn: nature can no longer cope with this pressure on its own.

Climatic Factor and Range Shifts

Sofia Sadogurska, a specialist from the climate department of the public organization "Ekodiya," explained in an interview with RBC-Ukraine that climate change directly affects the geography of species distribution. As the climate becomes warmer and drier, local plants unable to adapt to new conditions begin to disappear.

"Species less tolerant of warming may be replaced by those more adapted to these conditions," notes the expert. A natural but dangerous process emerges: new species, entering a favorable environment, begin to multiply actively and displace indigenous flora, which is not ready for such abrupt changes.

Human Factor: Accelerated Introduction

However, climate is only one of the reasons. A significant factor in the spread of invasive species has become humanity itself. Before the era of global travel and active introduction, the transfer of plants between continents occurred slowly and naturally. Today, humanity has become the main vector for species transfer, turning biological exchange into a serious problem.

"Now, when humanity actively moves species, it has become a problem," states Sadogurska.

Giant Hogweed: A Mistake of the Past

A striking example of the consequences of a careless approach is Giant Hogweed (Heracleum sosnowskyi). In the era of the USSR, this plant was introduced to Ukraine as a silage crop. Today, it represents an aggressive quarantine species, capturing meadows and road verges.

Giant Hogweed poses a real threat to human health. Its sap is extremely dangerous and can cause severe chemical burns to the skin. The plant, once brought for economic needs, has turned into an uncontrolled threat, displacing local grasses.

Ambrosia and the Allergic Threat

Another dangerous "guest" is Ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia). Having arrived in Ukraine from North America, it is known to residents as a potent allergen. The spread of this weed exacerbates health problems for the population, especially during the flowering season.

In the opinion of experts, the spread of such invasive species is an additional challenge closely linked to climate change. The situation requires a comprehensive approach and an awareness that the region's biodiversity is under threat.
