The situation in the Persian Gulf region has sharply escalated following a series of mutual accusations and military actions between Iran and the United States. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi made a stern statement warning Washington: no attack by American forces will go unanswered. His remarks came against the backdrop of a new wave of retaliatory strikes by the US over the downed helicopter.
Response to strikes on air defense
Araqchi’s statement was published on social media platform X and confirmed by CNN. The foreign minister emphasized that despite setbacks on the battlefield, the US has chosen to test its resolve. According to him, Iran’s powerful armed forces will not leave any attack or threat unanswered.
Araqchi also warned US troops: if they want to be safe, they should leave the region. He reminded them that the history of the Persian Gulf is full of chapters dedicated to the tragic fate of foreign invaders.
Course of escalation
His statement came immediately after the US launched its first strikes on Iranian air defense systems and radar facilities in the Strait of Hormuz area. Iranian media claim that American strikes hit two reservoirs in the south of the country. Meanwhile, CNN reports the start of a new wave of retaliatory strikes by the US.
Before Araqchi’s statement was published, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that it had launched missiles and drones at US targets in the Middle East. However, no details about target interception or the consequences of the attacks have been released yet.
Political context
The escalation occurred against the backdrop of tense negotiations. On June 9, US President Donald Trump stated that negotiations with Iran regarding the deal are in the final stage and an agreement could be reached in the coming days. However, later that same day, he reported that Iran had shot down an American Apache helicopter the previous day. In response, he promised that the US would retaliate.
Just before the strike, Trump emphasized in an interview with ABC News that the response must be powerful — and it will be.
