Ukrainian high jumper Iryna Herashchenko won the silver medal at the Diamond League stop in Zurich. The athlete cleared 2.00 m, matching her personal best, and finished behind Australian Nicola Olislaegers, who took 2.02 m. This result was not only a podium finish for Herashchenko but a crucial one: the silver medal earned her the points needed to qualify for the final of the prestigious athletics series. Three Ukrainians in the Sector
In Zurich, three representatives of Ukraine took to the high jump sector — Yaroslava Mahuchikh, Iryna Herashchenko, and Yulia Levchenko. For Herashchenko and Levchenko, this start was of particular importance, as both continued their fight for a place in the Diamond League Final. Herashchenko and Levchenko began the competition at 1.80 m and cleared it on their first attempt without difficulty, then took 1.85 and 1.89 m. At the 1.93 m mark, Herashchenko continued her run, while Levchenko failed to use her attempts; her last jump was moved to 1.96 m, but she was unable to clear that height either. In the end, Yulia finished the competition in ninth place with a result of 1.89 m.
The Road to the Podium
Yaroslava Mahuchikh started her performance at 1.93 m and cleared it immediately, and also took the next bar — 1.96 m — on her first attempt. Herashchenko also made no mistake at that height and then built herself an advantage: Iryna cleared 1.98 m on her first attempt, while Yaroslava could not conquer that height. After one failed attempt, Mahuchikh moved her jump to 2.00 m. In the end, only three athletes cleared the 1.98 m mark — Herashchenko, Australian Nicola Olislaegers, and Montenegro's Marija Vuković.
Matching Her Personal Best
At the 2.00 m height, the lineup of medalists was decided. Mahuchikh was unable to clear this bar, as was Vuković, however the Montenegrin took third place thanks to better previous attempts. Olislaegers cleared 2.00 m on her first attempt, while Herashchenko conquered this height on her second jump. For Iryna, the 2.00 m result was a match of her personal best. After this, Herashchenko moved her attempts to 2.02 m, but was unable to clear that height. Olislaegers, by contrast, took 2.02 m and became the winner of the stop. Thus, Herashchenko finished second, while Vuković completed the podium.
Second Consecutive Podium and Qualification for the Final
For Herashchenko, this is her second consecutive podium at Diamond League stops: before Zurich, the Ukrainian won the silver medal in Silesia. Notably, in Zurich Iryna beat Yaroslava Mahuchikh at a series stop for the first time in three years — the last time this happened was in July 2023 in Monaco. The silver medal in Zurich earned Herashchenko the points needed to advance to the Diamond League Final, so in the season's decisive start, Ukraine will be represented by two jumpers — Herashchenko and Mahuchikh. The Final will take place in Brussels on September 4–5, with a live broadcast available on the "Public Sport" platforms.
