Italy has made an unprecedented decision to close its maritime and air borders with Spain. The official order was issued by the Italian Ministry of the Interior on the morning of July 31, reports La Stampa citing government sources.
The decision to temporarily restrict movement resulted from an analysis of the latest data obtained by the Committee on Immigration and Border Security. A special meeting led by Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, held at the ministry, determined the necessity of strict measures in response to the current situation.
Strengthening Control on the Border with France
Alongside closing the borders with Spain, Rome has coordinated the strengthening of control on the land border with France. The corresponding decision was made following a phone call between Matteo Piantedosi and his French counterpart Laurent Nunes. The tightening of the regime will take place within the framework of previously signed agreements on police cooperation between the two countries.
Calls to Exclude Spain from Schengen
The situation in Europe has intensified against the backdrop of a large-scale migration crisis in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. Leaders of several European countries have already expressed readiness to support Italy's proposal to suspend Spain's participation in the Schengen Area.
Finnish Interior Minister Mari Rantanen stated that all EU countries should join Rome's initiative. Earlier, the possibility of such a step was confirmed by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
