An international scandal erupted in Vienna after Austrian law enforcement agencies detained Mykhailo Tkach, head of the investigative department of the Ukrainian media outlet Ukrainska Pravda, and his cameraman, Yaroslav Bondarenko. The incident occurred on October 8, 2026, while the journalists were performing a editorial assignment. Representatives of the publication and Ukrainian diplomats reacted immediately, demanding official explanations and the release of the employees from the Viennese authorities.

Viennese Prosecutor's Office Stance and Tkach's Release

Later, the Vienna Prosecutor's Office officially stated that suspicions of espionage against journalist Mykhailo Tkach were not confirmed. He was released from custody on Friday at 4:00 AM after spending about twelve hours detained. As explained by Nina Bussek, spokesperson for the Vienna Prosecutor's Office, during the investigative procedures, suspicions against two individuals (referring to the Ukrainska Pravda employees) were not confirmed, leading to the release of one while the questioning of the other continued.

Nevertheless, the situation surrounding the film crew remains tense. Cameraman Yaroslav Bondarenko was held in custody for an extended period. Furthermore, according to Sevgil Musaieva, editor-in-chief of the publication, Bondarenko sustained injuries during the arrest and was hospitalized, and his interrogation did not begin until late at night. In addition to the Ukrainska Pravda employees, two other Ukrainian citizens arrested earlier that week on suspicion of espionage also remained in custody in Austria.

Contradictory Data

Certain contradictions arose in the coverage of this incident between statements from Austrian officials, the editorial board's position, and reports from diplomatic agencies. While the Austrian Ministry of Interior and the prosecutor's office initially announced arrests on suspicion of espionage as part of large-scale checks, the management of Ukrainska Pravda called the accusations absurd and unprecedented in their practice. In addition, ambiguities remain regarding the exact physical condition of the detained cameraman and the legal grounds for his prolonged detention after suspicions against the head of the investigative department were dropped.

Media and Diplomatic Reaction

The event caused a wide resonance in the media space of Ukraine and Europe. Mykhailo Tkach is one of Ukraine's most famous investigative journalists who has specialized for many years in exposing corruption schemes among top politicians and major businessmen. The journalist's recent investigations touched upon the interests of high-ranking officials, including former Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko, who, according to anti-corruption authorities, may have been hiding in the Austrian capital. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, represented by spokesperson Georgiy Tykhyi, and embassy staff in Vienna joined the efforts to release the citizens from the first hours, demanding a transparent investigation into the circumstances of this detention.
