Karolina Muchova, the Czech tennis player and world No. 6, is forced to take a break from competition. The athlete announced that she has undergone surgery, which will require several weeks for recovery. This means she will not be able to participate in upcoming tournaments, including the prestigious WTA 1000 in Toronto.
Surgery and recovery plans
Announcing her condition herself on Instagram, the 29-year-old Muchova shared that the surgery was successful. In her video message, she thanked fans for their support and assured them that she has already begun working on getting back in shape. However, the recovery schedule will not allow her to return to the court in the coming weeks.
"I had to undergo a minor surgery that will keep me off the court for a few weeks. Everything went well, and I am already working on my recovery. Thank you for all your messages and support. I will be back soon," the Czech wrote.
Missed opportunities and the current season
Muchova's absence will be a noticeable blow to the tournament draw in Canada. The WTA 1000 tournament in Toronto will take place from August 2 to 13, and it is during this period that the athlete will be recovering. This event will be the first major tournament she misses following a series of outstanding results.
The current season can be called the best in the career of the Czech tennis player. Before the surgery, she reached the sixth spot in the world rankings, made possible by the Wimbledon final, where she lost to Linda Nosková. Additionally, this year Muchova has already won the WTA 1000 tournament in Doha and reached the final of the WTA 500 grass tournament in Bad Homburg. In Stuttgart, she also fought for the title, losing in the final to Elena Rybakina.
History of the Toronto tournament
The tournament in Toronto has a rich history of winners. Last year, the title was won by Canadian Victoria Mboko, while in 2023 and 2024, Jessica Pegula claimed victory. Notably, in 2017, Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina triumphed at this tournament, crushing Caroline Wozniacki in the final with a score of 6:4, 6:0.
