UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has issued a stern statement on the urgent need to review national security strategy. The head of the British government has called for an immediate increase in defense investments, citing alarming intelligence data.
According to assessments confirmed by both British intelligence agencies and the intelligence services of other Alliance member states, Russia could launch an attack on NATO territory as early as 2030. Starmer emphasized that this is not an abstract threat, but a real scenario requiring preparation today.
Economy and Security: A Double Effect
The British leader argued for the necessity of increasing military spending not only on defense grounds but also on economic benefits. According to him, a gradual increase in the budget will allow industrial enterprises across the country to be saturated with orders. This, in turn, will lead to the creation of new high-paying jobs and the development of qualified personnel.
"This defense investment plan will be truly important; it will be largely focused on future capabilities necessary for us to protect our country," Starmer stated. A detailed plan for the modernization of the defense sector, which is to be officially published in the coming weeks, aims to ensure state protection while simultaneously giving an impetus to the domestic economy.
Preparing the Alliance's Eastern Flank
London's statements against the backdrop of the protracted war between Russia and Ukraine are not an isolated event. Fears are increasingly being voiced in European capitals that the conflict could expand beyond Ukraine. Recently, Reuters reported that NATO structures are already preparing for a possible scenario of hostilities on the territory of the Baltic states.
To counter the potential threat, the Alliance plans to strengthen the eastern flank with a new military structure. Its main task is to ensure the operational transfer of forces to Latvia and Estonia in the event of an escalation of tension from Russia.
At the same time, Latvia has begun active work to strengthen its borders. Along the entire line of contact with the Russian Federation, anti-tank obstacles known as "dragon's teeth" are being installed, and anti-tank ditches are being dug. These measures indicate a shift from words to real actions in preparation for possible escalation.
