On the evening of October 16, Russian forces launched a series of missile strikes on Kharkiv, referred to in Ukrainian journalism as 'package deliveries.' According to RBC-Ukraine, City Mayor Ihor Terekhov on Telegram and Oleh Syniehubov, Head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, also on Telegram, reported the attacks. According to Terekhov, impacts were recorded in the Nemyshlyansky and Slobidsky districts, with the enemy striking the Nemyshlyansky district multiple times. The nighttime scene at the emergency site—firefighting crews connected to fire engine systems and a nearby ambulance with its warning lights flashing—clearly demonstrates the scale of emergency response deployed in the city following the strikes.
Victims and Scale of Destruction
At the time official statements were published, residential buildings were damaged in the Nemyshlyansky district as a result of the strikes, and over 100 windows were blown out. The Head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, Oleh Syniehubov, specified that a total of nine people were injured, suffering from acute stress reactions. Among the victims are a 13-year-old girl and a 13-year-old boy. Mayor Terekhov emphasized that the strikes on the Nemyshlyansky district were repeated, indicating a targeted attack on the residential areas of the district.
Scale of the Russian Attack Across Ukraine
Kharkiv was just one of the targets of a massive strike launched by Russia against Ukraine throughout the day on October 16. According to the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, since the morning of that day, Russian occupiers launched 315 strike UAVs and 15 missiles across Ukraine, which the Ukrainian side designates as 'package deliveries.' Ukrainian defenders managed to shoot down 253 drones, including 49 jet-powered ones, as well as nine missiles. Thus, a significant portion of the attack was intercepted, though some strike assets reached their targets, including in the Kharkiv region.
Energy Strikes and Gerasimov's Statement
Energy facilities in Ukraine were among the targets of the Russian attack on October 16. Power supply issues were recorded in several regions following the strikes. Against this backdrop, Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Russia Valery Gerasimov publicly announced the 'beginning' of massive strikes on Ukraine's energy sector. The combination of these statements and actual infrastructure strikes indicates that Russia is shifting the focus of its attacks to energy grid facilities, increasing the burden on civilian infrastructure and emergency services working amid nighttime accidents, as recorded in Kharkiv.
