On the night of September 9, 2026, and into the morning hours, Russia carried out a massive strike on the Ukrainian capital and Kyiv Oblast using jet-powered unmanned aerial vehicles. The Ukrainian Air Force urgently alerted residents on air: “Kyiv. Jet-powered UAV over the city! Stay in shelters!” According to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, the attack resulted in a drone hitting a residential building in the Darnytskyi district, and all emergency services were dispatched to the scene. At the time of publication, the exact number of casualties had not been officially announced.
Hit on a residential building: fire and wall destruction
According to updated information provided by the Ukrainian Air Force, in the Darnytskyi district a jet-powered drone struck a multi-story residential building at the level of the 11th–12th floors. A fire broke out on the 12th floor, and walls were destroyed. Fire and smoke, judging by footage from the scene, are localized in the upper part of the building; rescuers are working to extinguish the blaze and dismantle the structures. Mayor Klitschko confirmed that emergency services were dispatched to the address immediately after the alert and urged residents to follow safety rules and remain in shelters until the air raid alert is lifted.
Six districts of Kyiv Oblast hit in a single night
The September 9 attack was part of a broader wave of strikes on Kyiv Oblast: as of the morning, the Russians had hit as many as six districts of the oblast. In Bila Tserkva, a fire broke out at a food enterprise due to a drone hit; rescuers from the State Emergency Service fought the blaze all night, and their work was complicated by repeated air raid alerts and new salvos at the region. Repeated attacks hindered evacuation and the containment of fires, which is characteristic of the enemy's tactics in recent weeks.
Contradictory data
In the public statements of the parties and in the successive messages from authorities, there is a discrepancy in a key detail — the number of floors of the hit building. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko in his first message publicly called the building 16 stories tall: “In the Darnytskyi district, a UAV hit a 16-story building.” Meanwhile, the Ukrainian Air Force in a later operational message indicated that a 24-story residential building was hit at the level of the 11th–12th floors. The eight-story difference may be due to the fact that the mayor's first message was given “on the go,” before arriving at the scene and conducting a visual inspection, whereas the Ukrainian Armed Forces' data is based on intelligence and operational assessment. As of publication, no official refutation or final clarification from the KGB/State Emergency Service had been received, so both versions are recorded as equally valid until a final summary is issued.
Context: air defense and external support
Against the backdrop of ongoing nighttime attacks by jet-powered UAVs, the question of the effectiveness and readiness of air defense systems remains at the center of attention. At a “Rammstein” format meeting, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius stated that Germany had agreed to urgently transfer PAC-2 interceptor missiles for Patriot air defense systems from Bundeswehr stockpiles to Ukraine. In his words, Kyiv should receive these interceptors before the start of winter — that is, within the coming months. This decision is intended to close one of the most vulnerable segments of air defense, on which the enemy is increasingly relying, using precisely jet-powered drones capable of approaching the target at high speed and low altitude.
