North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has outlined a new strategic role for the country's naval forces. According to him, the navy must become a key element of Pyongyang's nuclear deterrence system. The relevant statement was made during an inspection of military facilities and defense enterprises.

New doctrine: navy as part of the nuclear shield

During his visit to military bases, Kim Jong Un emphasized that the development of the naval component of the armed forces is a strategic priority. In his view, the North Korean Navy should be integrated into the overall military doctrine and possess the ability to operate effectively in the event of a potential nuclear conflict.

The country's leader called for strengthening the combat capabilities of the fleet, modernizing the existing ship composition, and expanding programs for the construction of new combat units. In particular, this refers to the development of large destroyers and platforms capable of carrying modern missile systems.

Response to "threats" and regional tension

As reported by the KCNA agency, Pyongyang links the need to strengthen the navy with "growing threats from hostile states." The statement notes that the modernization of the navy and nuclear forces is a response to the military activity of the US and its allies in the region.

These statements come against the backdrop of active work on nuclear and missile programs. According to Western and South Korean analysts, North Korea continues to test ballistic missiles of various ranges, including systems capable of reaching the territory of South Korea, Japan, and partially the US.

Technological leap and leader's control

In 2026, North Korea repeatedly stated the need for an "exponential" increase in nuclear potential. Experts report inspections of new facilities for the production of nuclear materials, which may be related to the expansion of uranium enrichment. The IAEA agency has also recorded increased activity at the country's nuclear facilities.

Alongside the nuclear program, the naval component is actively developing. Kim Jong Un personally supervised the testing of new destroyers equipped with missile systems and air defense means. Analysts note that Pyongyang is striving to create a flexible deterrence structure where the navy serves not only as a defensive but also as an offensive tool.

Risks of escalation

In the regional context, an increase in military activity is being recorded. North Korea conducts regular missile tests, while the US and South Korea are increasing joint military exercises. Experts warn that such dynamics increases the risks of further escalation on the Korean Peninsula.
