The situation on the Kinburn Spit in the Mykolaiv region remains extremely tense. Despite Ukrainian troops managing to raise the national flag on the territory of the peninsula, Russian forces have not abandoned their positions. This was confirmed by Dmitry Pletenchuk, spokesperson for the Ukrainian Navy, in a comment to the 'Suspilne' media outlet.
Zone of Active Combat Operations
According to the Navy representative, the Kinburn Spit retains critical strategic significance for the Russian army. Ukrainian units are conducting active combat operations there, with the primary goal of destroying the enemy's logistical chains.
"This is a sequential process that has been going on for more than a year, not just a month. But as of now, the Kinburn Spit is a combat zone," Pletenchuk emphasized.
Strategic Significance of the Peninsula
Control over the Kinburn Spit has been held by Russian occupiers since March 2022. Russian troops captured the peninsula advancing from the Kherson region. This allowed them to establish dominance over a significant portion of the Black Sea waters.
The spit's geographical location at the exits of the ports of Kherson and Mykolaiv makes it a key hub. Capturing this territory effectively gave Russia the ability to block shipping from these strategically important ports. Furthermore, from positions on the spit, occupiers regularly launch attacks on the city of Ochakiv and adjacent areas.
Tactical Successes and Counterattacks
The Southern Territorial Defense Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine released a video showing a blue-and-yellow flag on the territory of the spit. The military reported that as a result of fire strikes, Russian troops were forced to retreat from their positions.
According to the Ukrainian side, the enemy is evacuating surviving personnel and leaving defensive lines. However, despite local successes and symbolic actions, the overall situation on the peninsula remains combat-heavy, and the territory continues to be under enemy control.
