Events unfolding on the border are becoming increasingly tense, and the information space has turned into a battlefield. On June 17, the acting governor of the Bryansk region made a sensational statement: according to him, Ukrainian military forces attacked a bus with children, resulting in the death of a woman and injuries to minors. However, behind the scenes of this 'news,' a sharp diplomatic and information struggle has unfolded.
General Staff Version: Information Provocation
The Ukrainian side categorically rejects the accusations. The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) stated that during the specified period, Ukrainian forces did not use unmanned aerial vehicles against targets in the Bryansk region at all. Military leadership emphasizes that Ukraine strikes exclusively against legitimate military objects and does not conduct hostilities against the civilian population.
'We consider such reports as yet another information provocation by the Kremlin. Unable to achieve the stated goals on the battlefield and suffering significant losses, the Russian Federation is increasingly resorting to information manipulation and fabricating accusations against Ukraine,' RBC-Ukraine quotes the statement.
Goal: Dragging Belarus into the Conflict
Andriy Kovalenko, head of the Center for Countering Disinformation, analyzed the motives of the Russian authorities. According to him, the Kremlin has noticed that Belarusian society does not wish to support Russia's aggressive rhetoric towards Ukraine. That is why, according to Kovalenko, Russian propaganda invented this alleged 'terrorist act.'\
The goal of the operation appears quite transparent to Ukrainian experts: to use the provocation to stir up the Belarusian population and incline them to support the aggressive actions of the Russian Federation. The Russian side has provided no factual evidence of the strike.
Minsk's Reaction: Condemnation and Warning
At the same time, Minsk reacted to the incident extremely seriously. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus stated that it resolutely condemns the incident in the Bryansk region of the Russian Federation. The ministry called the event an 'act of terrorism against the peaceful population' and demanded exhaustive explanations from the Ukrainian side.
Alongside diplomatic pressure, the Belarusian MFA issued a warning to its citizens. The ministry urged strict adherence to the procedures for sending children's groups abroad and completely excluded trips to conflict zones and adjacent regions.
Reality vs. Propaganda
While political elites exchange statements, the reality on the occupied territories of Ukraine tells a different story. Russian troops regularly strike Ukrainian cities, hospitals, and schools. As a result of recent missile strikes, in particular on Kyiv, dozens of civilians, including children, have been killed.
Occupation authorities are actively using administrative resources to pressure the population. School 'last bells' on temporarily occupied territories (TOT) have turned into a trap for graduates. Russian occupiers use assemblies for military agitation and the recruitment of teenagers into the Russian army's UAV units. Lists of children possessing drone piloting skills were handed over to the security services by collaborators even before the end of the school year.
Parallel to this, the process of destroying Ukrainian identity is underway. Russia continues Russification even in Ukrainian kindergartens on TOT, introducing mandatory Russian language lessons in older groups to displace the Ukrainian language from communication. While occupiers in the Donbas create myths about 'boosting the economy' through tourism, the region, which was a powerful industrial center, continues to crumble.
