A hearing was held on June 8 at the Shevchenkivskyi District Court of Kyiv regarding the fatal traffic accident on Chokolovskyi Boulevard. The court selected a preventive measure for the driver whose vehicle crashed into an underground pedestrian underpass, resulting in the deaths of four people.

Arrest without bail

At the request of investigators and juvenile prosecutors from the Kyiv City Prosecutor's Office, the 49-year-old Mercedes-Benz driver was remanded in custody for 60 days. The court rejected the possibility of posting bail. Deputy Head of the Kyiv City Prosecutor's Office, Anton Yefimov, represented the prosecution in court.

Chronology of the tragedy

The accident occurred on June 5 at approximately 17:00. According to the investigation, the vehicle was moving at excessive speed. The driver lost control on a curved section of the road, drove off the roadway, and crashed into the underground underpass where people were present.

As a result of the collision, four people died: two police officers, a woman, and a 12-year-old boy. Three other victims sustained injuries of varying degrees of severity.

Charges and history of violations

The driver was detained and informed of suspicion under Part 3 of Article 286 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (exceeding authority or official powers). The sanction of this article provides for punishment in the form of imprisonment for up to 10 years with deprivation of the right to drive a vehicle for up to three years.

Expertise confirmed that the man was sober at the time of the accident. However, his driving history appears alarming: since January 2025, he has been held administratively liable ten times for traffic violations, five of which were specifically for speeding.

Defense reaction

The suspect's lawyer stated that the man is deeply upset by what happened. According to the defender, for the father of five children, the situation is "absolutely unbearable," and he is not happy to have survived.
