On September 5, 2026, Kyiv Oblast was once again subjected to a massive shelling by the Russian armed forces. According to official data from the Kyiv Regional State Administration, the attack killed two people — residents of Bucha district. By 6:00 p.m. on the same day, 28 civilian facilities had been damaged across five districts of the region. This was announced by the head of the Regional Military Administration, Timur Tkachenko, in his Telegram channel, as reported by RBC-Ukraine.
Scale of destruction and the work of emergency services
Among the affected areas are Bucha, Fastiv and other districts of the oblast. In Fastiv district, the strikes sparked a fire, which was tackled by units of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SESU). As of the evening of September 5, no information had been received about casualties in that district. Emergency and rescue services continued to work at the scenes of the incidents, documenting the aftermath of the attack and assessing the damage. According to UNN, in Kyiv the operating schedule of the metro was changed against the backdrop of the ongoing strikes, and new damage to warehouse facilities was recorded in the oblast.
Statement by the head of the RMA: “Human life, family, loved ones”
“Today, Kyiv region was again subjected to a hostile attack. Unfortunately, two people were killed in Bucha district. That is the most terrifying. Every such report — that is a human life, a family, loved ones who are today experiencing irreparable pain,” emphasized Timur Tkachenko. The head of the regional administration called on residents of the region to take care of themselves, not to ignore danger alerts, and to follow the instructions of emergency services. According to him, at the time of the statement, all rescue units remained on site to fully account for the destruction.
Context: a series of strikes on Kyiv and the oblast
The September 5 attack was a continuation of a multi-day series of strikes. According to UNN, by this point the shelling by the Russian Federation had already continued for seven days. The day before, a Russian strike on Sofiivska Borshchahivka near Kyiv led to a fire at warehouse facilities. In addition, during another strike on the capital, debris from shot-down drones fell in four districts of the city at once, and the number of injured reached 14, including a child. According to UNN, a total of 163 drones were launched in one of the nighttime attacks, up to half of them of the jet type; the air defense system operated across all regions, but some targets broke through.
Political backdrop: Zelensky's statement on negotiations
Against the backdrop of the ongoing strikes, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky announced mutual agreements reached with the Russian side to refrain from attacks on Kyiv and Moscow during the conduct of negotiations with the participation of the American side. This statement came in the context of attempts at diplomatic settlement; however, as the events of September 5 show, the cessation of strikes on key cities is apparently either not being observed or is of a limited nature. The contradiction between the stated position and the actual consequences of the attacks remains one of the key issues for which neither side has yet given a public answer.
