The Ukrainian leadership has made a fundamental decision to reject the peace plan proposed by US President Donald Trump. This step is based on Kyiv's unwillingness to make the concessions outlined in the document, as well as a significant change in the situation on the battlefield.
Why Trump's Plan Did Not Suit Kyiv
As journalists learned, the peace plan consisting of 28 points was rejected by the Ukrainian side. The document contained conditions that contradict Ukraine's current strategic interests. In particular, the plan provided for the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from areas of the Donbas that are currently not occupied, as well as Kyiv's refusal to join NATO.
Currently, Ukraine is aiming to reach a new agreement with Russia that will take into account the changed realities. Unlike last year, when the negotiation process was conducted more actively, no meetings dedicated to discussing a specific peace treaty are planned at the moment.
A "More Creative" Approach to the War
Ukrainian Ambassador to the US Olga Stefanishina commented on the current situation, pointing to the improved positions of Ukrainian forces on the front. According to her, this success gives Kyiv the opportunity to approach the issue of ending the war "more creatively".
Ukrainian authorities are counting on using Donald Trump's irritation with the actions of Russian leader Vladimir Putin. Kyiv believes that to end the conflict, it is necessary to change the balance of pressure on Moscow, rather than holding negotiations on another version of a peace proposal that does not suit the Ukrainian side.
Summit in Ankara and New Priorities
Olga Stefanishina confirmed that Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Donald Trump could discuss these issues during a meeting at the NATO summit in Ankara. The presidents' negotiations will take place on July 8. The focus of the parties will be the issue of strengthening Ukraine's air defense (PVO).
Earlier, Volodymyr Zelenskyy talked about his mood before meeting with his American colleague. However, doubts remain in Europe regarding the results of this meeting. For now, Ukraine is betting on military pressure and diplomatic support, refusing the compromises laid out in the 28-point plan.
