Ukraine's defense industry is undergoing a period of radical transformation. While the focus was previously on purchasing Western systems, the country is now actively implementing its own innovative solutions that are changing the very architecture of air defense. Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, speaking at the Brave1 Advantage event, outlined large-scale plans to integrate laser weapons and artificial intelligence into combat operations.

The Era of Laser Weapons

One of the main areas of development has become laser defense. According to Fedorov, testing of laser air defense systems has already begun, and initial results have been obtained. Although details remain classified, the minister confirmed that this direction is actively developing and will soon become part of the arsenal.

Drones vs. Drones: Success Statistics

The most tangible results are demonstrated by the tactic of intercepting unmanned aerial vehicles using other drones. The statistics from recent months speak for themselves:

  • Only in May, Ukrainian forces shot down nearly 7,000 Russian unmanned aerial vehicles of the "Shahed" and "Gerber" types.
  • During one of the latest massive attacks, about 75% of enemy drones were destroyed specifically by interceptor drones.
  • During a recent attack on Kyiv, the interception efficiency reached 95%.

The Ministry of Defense has set an ambitious goal: by the end of the year, to raise the interception efficiency level to 95% across the entire territory of the country.

Scaling and New Technologies

To maintain such a pace of work, the department has already announced a tender for the purchase of another 150,000 unmanned aerial vehicles, including Middle Strike class models. In parallel, developments by about ten companies creating cheap interceptor missiles are being tested.

Special attention is being paid to the creation of cruise missiles using artificial intelligence technologies. Fedorov noted that, despite the futuristic sound, such systems will become commonplace within a year. Work is also underway on systems to counter ballistic missiles and guided aviation bombs.

A New Format of International Cooperation

Ukraine is not only developing its internal potential but also changing its approach to exports. The key tool has become agreements in the Drone Deal format. This format implies not just the sale of weapons, but comprehensive partnership: technology transfer, joint development, and the attraction of international financing. About 20 countries have already expressed interest in such cooperation.
