The main stage of the admission campaign for future first-graders in Kyiv has concluded, yet school doors remain open for those who missed the established deadlines for submitting documents. The Department of Education and Science of the Kyiv City State Administration (Kyiv City Council) has confirmed that the acceptance of applications for available places will continue until the start of the academic year.

Results of the main admission stage

The main period for document submission, during which children were enrolled in schools based on their place of registration, lasted from April 1 to June 1, 2026. As of June 11, according to data from the relevant department, 82.7% of children have already been enrolled in the capital's schools. This figure includes both toddlers whose families exercised their right to priority enrollment and those admitted to available places during the first stage.

What to do if the deadline is missed

For parents who, for some reason, did not manage to submit applications during the period from April to June, the situation is not critical. The Kyiv City Council clarified that the opportunity to enroll a child in school remains. The acceptance of documents for enrollment in remaining available places in general secondary education institutions will continue until the very start of classes.

"The acceptance of documents for the enrollment of children in available places in general secondary education institutions of Kyiv will continue until the start of the academic year," the department stated.

No shortage of places

The department also issued a reassuring statement for capital families, noting that the problem of a shortage of places in schools is not acute this year. The existing network of educational institutions fully covers the city's needs.

"The number of available places in general secondary education institutions is sufficient to ensure the right to education for all those who wish," the Department of Education and Science of the Kyiv City Council summarized.

Context: new educational standards

Entering the first grade this year takes place against the backdrop of major changes in the Ukrainian education system. Recently, the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine approved a new Standard Educational Program for grades 1–4 of general secondary education institutions. According to the plan, starting from September 1, 2028, first-graders will be taught according to updated standards.

These steps are part of a broader reform, including the transition to a 12-year school education, the consequences of which will begin to be felt as early as 2026.
