Latvia has officially become the sixth country to join the international Drone Deal initiative. This agreement aims to deepen cooperation in defense technologies, including the development and mass production of unmanned aerial vehicles. The signing of the document was announced by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in his Telegram channel.

The agreement was signed during the first meeting between the President of Ukraine and the new Prime Minister of Latvia, Andris Kučinskis. The document became a key outcome of the negotiations and is intended to strengthen the joint defense of partner countries.

Essence of the Agreement and Technological Exchange

The Drone Deal initiative implies not only practical interaction in the field of security but also active exchange of technologies. The treaty provides for the transfer of Ukrainian experience and innovative solutions to partners. This allows for the formation of an expanded network of long-term defense partnerships based on mutual support and common interests.

The parties agreed on the development of defense innovations, training of qualified specialists, and implementation of new technological solutions. The main goal is to strengthen the defense potential of both countries through joint production and modernization.

Discussion of Air Defense and Sanctions Policy

During the negotiations, the leaders paid special attention to issues of strengthening Ukraine's air defense systems. Current needs of the Ukrainian air defense and the possibilities of their satisfaction through partner support from Latvia were discussed.

A separate block of the discussion was devoted to the sanctions policy towards Russia. The parties discussed the need to strengthen restrictions, in particular, against the so-called "shadow fleet" used to bypass economic sanctions.

Context of the Initiative

Latvia became the sixth country to join the project. Earlier, on May 13, a similar agreement in the format of the Drone Deal was signed by Ukraine and Lithuania. Then President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda, and the parties agreed on cooperation in the field of defense expertise and industry.

Ukraine emphasized the importance of systematic support from Latvia and thanked them for consistent assistance in the conditions of the ongoing war.

Recall that about a year ago, Ukraine put forward an initiative for a large-scale agreement with the United States in the field of unmanned technologies. The project envisaged the export of Ukrainian developments and the organization of joint drone production with an estimated volume of up to $50 billion. However, as of now, no official decision has been made by the American side on this initiative.
