Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov commented on recent statements by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio regarding support for Ukraine. According to the Russian minister, the American diplomat's words indicate that differences in the approaches of Washington and European countries to resolving the conflict have effectively faded.
Unity of Western Positions
Lavrov emphasized that, despite external differences, the essence of the US and European positions remains unchanged. "Given what Marco Rubio said — and I have business relations with him; we literally discussed the Ukrainian situation with him two weeks ago — given what he said about supporting Ukraine, there is essentially no difference in the approaches of the US and Europe," the minister stated.
Earlier, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio openly stated that the United States does not take the position of a neutral mediator in the war between Russia and Ukraine. According to him, Washington continues to support Kyiv while simultaneously maintaining political and economic pressure on Moscow.
Foreign Policy and Real Actions
At the same time, Sergey Lavrov noted that US foreign policy may appear more "positive" externally. He referred to the fact that the Donald Trump administration initially advocated for dialogue with Russia. The minister recalled the agreements reached by the presidents of Russia and the US at the summit in Alaska last year, which, according to him, concerned possible ways to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.
Lavrov expressed the opinion that if the American side had truly promoted its own initiatives for settlement, the negotiation process could have started significantly earlier. According to his assertion, in such a case, hostilities would have been stopped.
