In Ukraine, a special type of pension provision continues to operate — the length of service pension. However, not all citizens are entitled to it: only certain categories of workers whose profession leads to a loss of professional fitness over time, and only upon strict compliance with legislatively established conditions.
Who can claim a length of service pension?
As reported by Tatyana Korol, Deputy Chairman of the Pension Fund of Ukraine, in response to a request from RBC-Ukraine, this type of pension is granted regardless of the general retirement age. The main condition is the presence of special work experience in positions and institutions directly specified in the legislation.
Special attention is paid to artists of theatrical and concert and other entertainment institutions. They can apply for a length of service pension with a creative work experience of 20 to 35 years — depending on the category of the institution and the position. The list of such institutions and the calculation procedure are approved by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine.
Exception for those who have already accrued service before 2017
There is another category of citizens who can apply for a length of service pension under the old rules. This refers to those who, as of October 11, 2017, already had the necessary work experience and service. For them, the possibility remains to apply to the PFU with a statement and arrange payment in accordance with the legislation in force at that time.
What is important to know about crediting work experience
Previously, RBC-Ukraine reported that under the new rules, certain periods — for example, education or caring for a relative — are included in the work experience only if there are corresponding documents. Also, work abroad can be credited towards work experience if a bilateral agreement is in force between Ukraine and the country of residence.
Thus, the length of service pension remains an important tool of social support for those whose profession requires special effort and leads to loss of ability to work early. However, it can only be arranged by complying with all legislative requirements and having confirmed special work experience.
